Standard Mental Health First Aid

The 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course upskills adults to assist other adults who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

At the completion of the course, all participants will have the opportunity to attain a 3 year accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider with MHFA Australia.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

The 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults who work, live or care for adolescents, such as school staff, parents, sports coaches, community group leaders and youth workers.

Course participants will learn how to assist an adolescent who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

At the completion of the course, all participants will have the opportunity to attain a 3 year accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider with MHFA Australia.

Teen Mental Health First Aid

The Teen Mental Health First Aid course provides students with the opportunity to learn how to provide mental health first aid to their friends. It has been developed for high school students in Years 7-9 and Years 10-12 but can also be delivered in other settings such as sports clubs, juvenile justice settings, scouts and guides.

This course teaches young people to recognise when a friend is experiencing major changes in their thinking, feeling and behaviour, and when these changes may indicate the presence of a mental health problem. Furthermore, the course upskills young people on how to support their friends with mental health problems or those in crisis situations using the Teen MHFA Action Plan.

This course is taught over 3 x 75mins or 3 x 60mins classroom sessions on non-consecutive days and can only be delivered in settings where adults have been trained in Youth MHFA.

Young people can demonstrate their mental health first aid skills by becoming an Accredited Teen Mental Health First Aider by completing the all three sessions.

BLENDED ONLINE COURSE

All Blended Mental Health First Aid courses are delivered using a hybrid model, comprising of two online learning platforms:

Course Component 1

Self-paced, interactive, eLearning (approx. 5-7 hours to complete) provides an overview of mental health problems and mental health crises using case-studies, videos and resources tailored to the learning needs of the course participants.

Course Component 2

Virtual, face-to-face (2 x 2.5 hour sessions) follows the completion of Course Component 1 and provides participants with an opportunity to revise content covered in the eLearning program and to consolidate the application of this content with the development of practical skills in a group environment online.

Upon completion of both sections, participants will have the opportunity to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider, lasting for three years.

**Both course components are to be completed within a 3-month period.

Blended Community MHFA

The Blended Online MHFA Community Course has been adapted from the Standard Mental Health First Aid Course for adults. It is a hybrid course, comprising a self-paced, e-Learning element, and 2 x 2.5 hour virtual, face-to-face sessions on Zoom.

In this informative and practical course, participants will learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide mental health first aid in a crisis situation using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

Blended Workplace MHFA

The Blended Online MHFA Workplace Course has been adapted from the Standard Mental Health First Aid Course for adults.

This workplace focused MHFA course, provides relevant information and tailored scenarios and exercises that will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to provide initial mental health first aid to assist colleagues, clients, and other workplace contacts who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis, and how to connect people needing assistance to existing workplace supports and external professional help.

Participants will learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide mental health first aid in a crisis situation using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

Blended Tertiary MHFA

The Blended Online MHFA Tertiary Course for Tertiary Students teaches course participants how to assist a fellow student developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

This course has been tailored to the learning needs of tertiary student participants, who will learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide mental health first aid in a crisis situation using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

REFRESHER COURSES

Refresher courses are 4 hour face-to-face courses that allow people who have previously completed a 12 or 14 hour Mental Health First Aid course to refresh their knowledge and skills. For people who are Accredited MHFAiders, the refresher courses offer an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further 3 years.
